Emergency Survival Kits And You

By Alyce Powell

Nobody likes it when an emergency strikes, but they are unfortunately a part of life. If there is some kind of power outage or natural disaster in your area, you will want to be prepared. Emergency survival kits are one way for you to not only be prepared, but to possibly save some lives, depending on the situation.

A premade kit is a great idea, but you may want to add on a few other things like extra food. Most of these premade packs have only a certain amount of food, which should be split up and rationed over a number of days. If you think you need more or might need to help out a neighbor, then stock up on nonperishable, shelf-stable foods.

Water is another item that you can never have too much of. Sure, there might be some in your kit, but it is usually only a bare minimum amount to survive. You will want more not only to drink, but also to use for sanitary reasons and to keep on hand in case a neighbor might need some.

The wide variety of kits available today are usually focused on disasters, many of which are caused by extreme weather or natural events beyond our control. One such example is an earthquake, which are common in areas on or near a fault line. Theses particular packs are geared specifically for conditions that may occur after an earthquake, and usually have the bare essential to last a certain amount of days for two to four people.

Speaking of weather, another such pack that is widely available is a hurricane kit. These can be used for other weather disasters such as tropical storms, flash floods, or even a tornado. They have all the essentials you would need for such a storm, and like earthquake packs they are metered out for a certain amount of people, so read carefully and purchase more than one if needed.

Some stores might also sell a specialty kit called that is specifically geared for search and rescue efforts. Some of these kits may have a small portable stretcher that folds out to help carry a person to safety. These are good for emergencies where a person might be injured or unable to move for some reason. You may even find things like flashlights, gloves, or reflective vests so you can be seen in the dark during a power outage.

Not all emergencies are due to inclement weather, some have to do with a faulty car part. If you find yourself broken down on the side of the road, hopefully you have a pack in the trunk of your car. This is especially important if you live in a rural area or travel through them often, because help may not come for several hours. Keep one or more kits in your vehicle that have flairs, first aid supplies, and water at a bare minimum.

Emergency survival kits are easy to find online or in stores, and come in many different shapes and sizes. You should always look ahead and be prepared in case of an emergency with one of these packages. It is always better to have one on hand and be safe rather than sorry.
