By Essie Osborn

Michigan houses the great lakes which is one of the biggest in the world. This offers an opportunity to do fishing considering the fact that it is a fresh water lake. The social and economic impact of this activity, is quite big for Michigan state and its people in a wider perspective. This needs a good review of northern Michigan fishing report.

The best analysis can be done by analyzing the various areas that this activity is done. On the other side Michigan benefits from the harsh winter temperatures that results to winter-kill. This is where fish die due to harsh winter weather. This kill can be seen in shallow ponds, streams and on top of lakes. The thick ice characterized during winter is the main cause of this death.

The winter-kill in and of itself cannot be attributed to the low numbers in the fish population. This is because nature has its own was of maintaining the size and its number in one way or another. Why, during winter the fish population falls due to the kill however during the summer the conditions are good and they rear quite a lot. It takes the tradition approach in summer than in winter. This explains why the south has more fish during summer and the highest winter-kill.

The northwest part can be analyzed as a follows. Most parts have been affected by great ice cover and the channels have been inaccessible and this has hampered fishing in a holistic way. This consequently has affected the whole economy in these areas.

The majorly affected areas are Platte Bay, Onekama, Frankfort, Portage Lake, and Lake Cadillac. However, for the latter, according to various anglers, it is accessible for the moment but an increase in the temperatures could render the whole lake inaccessible. This consequently, has an effect the whole process as some anglers have been recorded to using body baits, spawn, minute spoons and wax worms. The turn out by the anglers is quite high but the catch is small.

The Upper Peninsula report, the fishing is affected with the fast melting of snow. Especially Little Bay, Cedarville and Hassel, Munising and Keweenaw Bay. The warm temperatures can be attributed to variations and the good catch that has characterized their catch. Anglers have had to deep their spoons thirty or so feet in the Anna River and Sand Point.

The most common catch include: whitefish, rainbow, perch, crappies, gills, pan fish, bluegills, and turbot. These, find their way into many eating joints located in close proximity to the lake. The most desired being the perch because of its size and the ease it comes with catching one which is done through a hunt. However, the one which is caught in huge numbers and is the crappies and the pan fish. They are the ones that suffer from the ice kill more than any other type of fishes.

Anglers and generally anyone who would want to fish can get a license from as low as thirty US dollars. This has contributed heavily on the increase in the whole activity.
