The idea of this kind of racing came about in 1993. A group of racers wanted a bigger audience and they then produced a prototype for a NASCAR style truck. It was first shown during the Daytona 500 in 1994 and four other demonstrations were held during the season. These forms of racing became very popular with the public and eventually lead to the creation of the series known as SuperTruck.
Earl Baltes had no previous racing experience but was very impressed by the way the crowd reacted while watching an event. He decided to build his own track because of it. Before he bought the speedway he purchased a ballroom and offered dance lessons every week as well as different musical performances. He later shortened all performances as the track grew more popular.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is named after its current sponsor. It was originally known as Strictly Stock Series and then became known as the Grant National Series. The champion is determined by a point system. Points are given according to where they finished and how many laps that they led.
