By Jessica Brooks

Over the years, the State of Wisconsin has been renowned as one of the top cycling destinations in America. Once you hop on your New Glarus bike tour, you will be treated to breathtaking views of the local lakes and rolling plains. There are many other spectacular attractions, with the local breweries being top among them.

Tour firms usually offer 3 to 8 day tour packages. You may transport your bike if there is enough space in your vehicle or simply opt for a rental, with prices starting at $100. Most firms also arrange for accommodation in standard and luxury rooms ranging from $500 upwards for five day stays.

Before traveling, it is important to check with the local tour firms on the availability of tours during that season. There is very little activity that goes on in winter and spring. The busiest months for the local firms are the months of summer. Just send an advance email to confirm availability.

The tour usually starts at Madison. There are miles of trails that follow the shores of lakes Monona and Mendota. The picturesque lakes are always filled with kayakers, sailors and paddle boarders. In summer, you will see lots of camping families by the many campgrounds that dot the lakeside.

The local trails mostly head out to the countryside. The sprawling farms and red barns regularly feature in the albums of many cyclists who stop by to snap them. A popular resting place for cycling parties is the Edgewater Hotel. It is constructed on a strategic area that allows unhindered views of Lake Mendota and the grand Capitol Dome.

The most visited cycling spot in the state is New Glarus, situated just a couple of miles away from Madison. It is a town that began in 1845 after the arrival of Swiss immigrants. Many visitors find its hills and cattle grazing on the sprawling farms a magical sight. The town streets are quite and dotted with chalets and Swiss museums. Be sure to get a drink at a famous brew pub in the southern section of the town.

If you look out carefully enough, you should be able to spot the skyline of Madison. The town is conveniently connected to Madison city through good roads. It is always advisable to cycle by the roadside in spite of the low traffic. After a cycle to the outskirts of town, you may head back to any of the several local restaurants for lunch.

To the east of town are lakeside communities, rolling ridge lines and open prairies. Glacial forces are largely attributed to the formation of the breathtaking landscape. Aztalan is the most crucial archeological site in the locality. It has remains that go as far back as 1000 AD. You should certainly stop by and check the area out.

Visitors often make it a point to check out Lake Geneva. Its surrounding landscape consists of bogs and forestland. Ride carefully when traversing the nearby trails. The vicinity of the lake is also lined up with restaurants, so grabbing a quick meal while exploring should be easy.
