Useful Tactics To Embrace When Hunting For Alligators

By Diane Olson

Hunting continues to be a widely enjoyed hobby done by people from different regions in the world. However, the techniques used in pursuing deer, swine, and other wild animals are not similar to catching an alligator. The reptiles are lethal and do not spare both humans and animals that come near their habitat. As such, going for this hunt demands that you use the best tools and be ready for a physical challenge. Below are guidelines for selecting the best tools and ideas for successful hunting for alligators.

Both newbies and experienced hunters must assemble the essential gadgets before venturing into the water for this hunt. The reptiles can be captured with bare hands or thread traps because they are heavy and can slice you into pieces when they hit on you. As such, an electrical tape, headlight, bang stick, harpooning pole and a snatch hook must be obtained. Moreover, the tools should be durable, efficient and practical.

Learning the tricks of apprehending these lethal reptiles is crucial for any hunt. Unlike deer or wild boar, they hide and feed around swampy areas. As such, they will scarcely be seen on open land or in the farms making it difficult for you to hunt them down. Therefore, if you must indulge in this activity, be prepared to do it on rivers, lakes, swamps and other water bodies that are nearby.

Although the reptiles are lethal, they prefer to hunt down when they are hiding. They stay beneath the water and wait for anything edible that comes to drink water before thrashing it down. As such, your baits should be set on the water, and they must be smart especially if you are targeting mature reptiles. The young ones are attracted to anything foreign moving on the water making them an easier catch.

Use of chicken scent or attaching a piece of cloth torn to look like a chicken lures them all. They come for it thinking it is an egret which is their favorite only to fall on the bait. The piece is fixed on the harpooning pole and placed a few inches above the water level. Anything above the water is a target for the big reptiles which ensures you of a worthy catch.

A hunt done alone is suicidal considering that the reptiles could come after you in large numbers. In such scenarios, you will be turned into a meal within seconds to bring your dreams and adventure into a halt. Therefore, take with you some friends who know how these predators ate hunted. Also, go with a vessel that has received recent maintenance to avoid accidents in the expedition.

Besides using a harpoon and a fishing rod, it is important that you carry with you a bang stick and a small gun. If you can get closer to the reptile, banging it will save you the struggle of dragging it to the cabin while still fighting. Moreover, use of a bang stick is a humane way of dispatching the reptiles than a shooting.

Some states have stringent laws regarding animal poaching and hunting. Before you go for this hunt, visit the nearest licensing body and get a permit. Without it, you are prone to prosecution or hefty fines according to the stipulated laws.
