Catch more big carp in cold water fast by using these expert tips and refinements to your unique advantage! Take control of your baits instead of the lottery of readymade baits where so many anglers using the same baits fail to achieve exceptional catches, especially in winter! Get into the cutting-edge of bait making now and get ahead of your mates! These tips will make all the difference to you and your catches, fast!

One of the first big points to grasp about cold water baits is that you must make them exceptionally active! You must make your baits incredibly potent and readily water soluble! Bait digestion is far less important compared to feed-triggering potential, but if you are using lots of bait in winter then it must ideally be rich in pre-digested or hydrolysed additives. Winter baits are at their very best when they are so active that they are extremely detectable by fish in minimum volumes from maximum range!

Take practical function first and foremost as the priority and not bait form. The most powerful aspect of winter bait and indeed any bait is its function, as opposed to its physical form! Bait form may include physical and mechanical aspects and properties such as bait method of binding, shaping, physical binding, texture, feel, breakdown characteristics, permeability and solubility and appearance when in water for any length of time! Compared to physical form, physical and mechanical aspects, actual bait function are massively more important! Very many anglers make the sad mistake of putting form before function, for instance aiming to make perfectly round boilies as more important than the actual function of bait in triggering maximum feeding responses!

Most especially for cold water baits, bait function is the key to success and this covers most of the hidden non-visual aspects of bait; all of which can be improved to incredibly highly refined degrees for maximum success! Carp physiology i.e. internal and external functioning is really the focus of carp bait function and is the key to success in how powerfully your bait triggers feeding responses! Bait function physically and chemically involves how bait substances actually disperse through the water column, react with water and carp sensory systems to excite feeding responses both internally and externally. Bait function in cold water relates crucially to dissolved solution and as active, rising and suspended and sinking solution and particulates and more, thus this is the most powerfully detectable most stimulatory bait!

The sole primary aim and purpose of bait is to get your hook into the fish's mouth! The critical role and object of bait is to hook fish, (not feed them!) So many anglers view bait as food yet that is really a red herring in so many ways, the true aim being to get fish feeding responses activated in real time, in the moment to maximise chances of hook baits in mouths, by using fish senses against them to induce the most powerful and intense feeding responses possible! The very best way to induce fish feeding behaviours is to generate fish responses in the moment and not by feeding fish up, (which in winter can dramatically reduce your chances of hooked fish because they can easily become satiated before your hook baits are taken!)

The best baits for winter are the ones fish will take immediately! The single bait approach in winter is a prime example of true bait effectiveness using absolute minimum bait. The very best winter baits are created so they stand out from background natural chemical clutter and leak stimuli that gets carp attention in ways that immediately stimulate instant feeding behaviours. Instant baits stimulate instant feeding!

Instant baits of years ago were usually variations of merely carbohydrate semolina or maize-based significantly insoluble baits. Carbohydrate baits were over-flavoured using solvent-based flavours which leached from baits fast. Among the fastest flavours to leave baits are the ethyl alcohol forms and propylene glycol flavours, often acidic sweet, fruit or spice characteristics and properties, though many were actually alkaline. Many effective winter flavours have an alkaline effect even though they are acidic!

There are many contradictions in carp baits, and it strikes many anglers as strange that substances that carp would never find within their natural environment will trigger feeding, or have profound internal impacts and effects. Understanding aspects of internal effects of bait substances such as flavours, additives and ingredients, in powder and liquid forms is a massive advantage and edge in the competitive world of carp fishing! A perfect example of a substance that stimulates carp but not normally found in the aquatic environment are citrus fruit oils, which have powerful and profoundly potent internal impacts on carp and are ideal in winter conditions! One of the biggest edges in carp baits is actually to make blends of substances so you get fast and slow leak-off of the same or similar substances simultaneously.

By making baits that stimulate all the sensory systems simultaneously, you really harness the true power of homemade baits best, and you can achieve this in incredibly potent ways to create the very best baits you've ever made! When you create base mixes genuinely optimised for form and function, to the point of being optimised even if you merely add water, then you are just touching upon the real world of optimised baits without liquid proteins and no flavours etc necessary at all; the base is the flavour, the protein, and the core of everything that becomes solution! Blue cheese powder is historically linked with winter carp bait success and combines the best of what carp are seeking including essential traces and mineral salts, and proteins (in whole and pre-digested forms,) alongside palatability enhancers, natural flavours, medium chain fatty acids similar to many found in coconut oil, (but in far more instantly suitable and most detectable forms for cold water conditions!) When you team probiotic yeast and de-activated yeast you know from decades of winter big carp captures you have winning substances, but combined with blue cheese powder, you produce bait extremely potent indeed ideal for winter, spring and indeed all conditions!

The combining of yeasts and blue cheese equals active functions internally regarding bait activity, solubility, feeding-triggering powers, vital palatability enhancement as well as external functional advantages! Yeast and blue cheese (no-egg) boilies are an excellent form of bait that immersed in cold water, breaks down quickly almost dissolving entirely into the water column; thus maximising your bait feed-triggering potential without satiating fish! Winter boilie binding, or indeed of summer baits is best achieved by avoiding egg in any liquid (nor powder forms,) because these drastically reduce bait solubility, activities and detectability functions so that such baits merely work the water column and fish sensory systems at minimum levels and effects! At winter temperatures the digestive enzyme activities of carp are very limited; so using very energy and internal resources-draining protein in the form of insoluble egg is just not ideal at all for cold water conditions and can be bettered, drastically!

Anyone who has compared using egg boilies to no egg boilies will certainly notice how much more successful and indeed instant making baits without eggs in truth is; imply make baits with no egg (in any form i.e. no liquid or powder egg,) and compare those baits to the same base mix baits bound with eggs; no egg baits are superior, especially in winter, even though fish are seeking protein at this time! Making seriously active winter baits that are genuinely optimised and maximised requires skill, and masses of testing, and having experience makes a gigantic difference! Having been making homemade baits for 40 years, the most significant aspects are not found in bait substances and not in recipes either, but in understanding the extremely profound aspects of carp internally, and externally too, and within the context of modern competitive pressured fishing environment where fish of all weights have become extremely bait selective! Making your homemade baits different is not enough; you must make baits genuinely maximised for form and function, including optimum synergistics of palatability and nutrient stimulation and much more, that also stimulate carp internally as well as externally, in the most highly refined ways possible for each water temperature and condition.
