Getting Ready For Barbary Sheep Hunting

By Melissa Stewart

Different people have various hobbies, which they use to relieve the stress of everyday life. Some people prefer sedentary activities like going for a yoga class or visiting an art museum, while others will go for something a bit more invigorating like Barbary sheep hunting. If you fall into the second category, whether you are a beginner or a veteran, there are things you should do, to ensure you are prepared for the hunt.

First, you have to apply for a license and if you already own one, check its status. Anyone over the age of seventeen is allowed to hunt, but the privileges on your permit will depend on your expertise. Some of these permits are free, while others will cost you up to fifty dollars. However, they are a compulsory requirement for any hunter.

Ideally, hunting for sheep might require you to walk for long in the heat while trying to draw them out. To do this effectively, you have to be fit. Therefore, start doing some physical activities to get your body in shape before you go for any expeditions. Consider signing up at a local shooting or archery range, to work on your skills. This is necessary whether you are planning to use a firearm or a crossbow.

Shooting at sheep is not exactly rocket science, but it is not that easy either. This is why most business people will not let you roam around their properties completely unsupervised. However, if you want to do this without a guide, you will need to prove that you are an expert, or a member of your party is. On the other hand, if you feel like you need some help a guide can be assigned to your group for a fee.

Mostly when hunting for these creatures, people go for the males. These are usually easier to locate when they are looking for partners during the mating season. Most ranches organize sheep hunts either in spring or fall. This way their numbers can stabilize, and it also prevents young sheep from getting caught in the crossfire.

In most cases, these activities take part on private land. You, therefore, will have to pay the owner some money. In some cases, the rates you are charged will involve things like lodging meal and even the stuffing of your trophy. You will also find that the cost will differ depending on the size of your group. Look for a place that offers you comprehensive packages at reasonable rates, this way you get value for your money.

The tools you use and the clothes you wear will play a part in determining whether you hit an animal. You will require proper clothes to protect you from the elements, while still keeping you hidden from the Barbary sheep. Additionally, all your weapons need to be in good condition, and you should confirm that they are fit for hunting.

Unless this was a last minute decision, try to arrange for this trip at least two months in advance. This allows people to clear their schedules and to get their finances in order. It also ensures that you get to go where you want, instead of scrambling for any available openings. When including people with busy schedules, try to ensure that the trips fall on the weekends of holidays.
