Improve Your Health With Folsom Blues Half Marathon Training

By Maria Allen

A marathon is one of those things that a lot of people would love to try, but they are afraid they are not in good enough shape to do so. While you could try to train alone to get into condition, there are also Folsom Blues Half Marathon training groups that you can join. Doing so in a group can provide you with the motivation you need to get your body ready for the big event.

If the name of the marathon sounds familiar, that is because it is a tribute to the famous song by the legendary Johnny Cash. Fans and people who want to participate come from all over to the city of Folsom for the event. It was started in 2012 and now hotels fill up in advance for all the visitors.

It begins on the Johnny Cash bridge, so fans of the late country singer often participate in his honor. It then goes for 13.1 miles, including around Lake Natoma, which is a rather scenic area that draws many watchers who cheer on the runners. The end of the line is in the Historic District of the city of Folsom. There, you get to enjoy a Johnny Cash tribute ban, along with a free beer for those who finished. Rockabilly tunes are played throughout the route for your enjoyment and to keep with the theme.

Trying to run 13.1 miles without proper training is a bad idea. If you know you cannot run or jog that far, you can always walk. Lots of people, especially those with kids, walk the entire course. If you would rather get in better shape though, there are several local groups you can join.

No matter what shape you are in, there is a group of people who are at your level. You start with that group, and the goal is to get better and faster so that you can move up. Even if you want to walk and just don't want to get winded, there is a group for that as well. You will find that within a few sessions, your gait and pace will improve dramatically.

Joining one of these groups is a big commitment in time, as each one lasts for several months. One starts in the summer and goes on through to the fall. If you would rather start in winter, that group goes into the spring. Either way, you will have several weeks to get better and faster.

Many people keep with the sessions, even after the marathon itself is over. Some are simply training for the next year. Others are going because they have met friends and want to keep up the camaraderie. Still others like that they lost weight and are feeling stronger and healthier than ever, and want to keep it up.

For some, the groups are a one time thing, and they drop out after the race is over because they don't plan to run another one. But for many, the benefits and increased confidence in themselves when they lose weight and feel strong are something that they want to continue. It becomes a part of their lifestyle, and can be a part of yours too if you want to get healthier.
