Extreme San Diego: What To Do & Where To Go

Lots of people love lying by the beach soaking up the rays and plenty of people enjoy a day exploring the shops of Old Town or a trip to the San Diego Zoo. If you are the type of person who enjoys excursions and activities that are a tad more adventuresome, don't worry, San Diego and its surrounding environs offers plenty of extreme sports and adventure activities that are sure to fit the bill. Here are a just a few examples of what is in store for the adventurous type.

With such proximity to the ocean, there are many excellent options for water sports, from parasailing to waterskiing to scuba diving. La Jolla has some fascinating sea caves and several companies offer kayaking adventures in and around the caves. Cliff jumping in La Jolla is also a popular activity for extremists, but it is important to note that while there are some great jumps, the sport itself is illegal. If these suggestions sound too pedestrian, you could opt to try something fun like open ocean shark dives. Typically you will be swimming with Blue sharks and Makos, and while the latter can be aggressive, you probably will be perfectly safe in your shark-resistant cage.

There are some great surf spots in the area, and the best waves are found at places such as Trestles, which is located in the northern edge of San Diego County. Black's Beach is another surfing hot spot to consider. Of course, if you really want to get extreme and ride some of the world's biggest waves, consider a trip out to the Cortes Bank. It's about 100 miles off the coast, but this tow-out surf spot boasts waves as big as you'd find at Waimea Bay or Maverick's.

San Diego offers plenty of extreme sports opportunities for those who want to try something in the air. In addition to several skydiving centers, you can rent a jetpack and soar 30 feet above the ground as well as diving into ocean. You can also enjoy a Top Gun-esque experience and fly in a fighter jet. One basic air combat package includes practicing combat maneuvers as well as engaging in six different dogfights.

San Diego isn't known for its towering mountain peaks, but there are still some great climbing and bouldering activities. Indoor rock climbing gyms are springing up all over the place, but if you prefer being out in nature, head to Mt. Woodsen for tons of bouldering. Mission Gorge is a great place to practice rock climbing, and this area is located right in the middle of the city at Mission Trails Regional Park.

If you want be fit and strong to take on all of these extreme adventures, you definitely should train in an extreme way.
