Catching catfish is not only popular in the United States but also in other countries including Canada and most countries in Asia. Some of the reasons for the increased popularity in catfishing is that catfish are a good meal, they can also be found easily either in freshwater and it's fun and easy to do. One characteristic of catfish that makes it easy for people to distinguish them from other fishes in the water is the presence of their barbell which is quite similar to a cat's whiskers. The main purpose of this barbell or whiskers is for sensory reasons. Aside from that, catfishing is easy to do because of the number of available types of baits that you can use in catching catfish. Some of the mostly use catfish baits are shrimps, chicken liver, cutbait, frogs, worms and sucker minnow.

Because most catfish are freshwater fishes, they can be easily found and it will be easy to find a good location to do your catfishing. Aside from that, when fishing for catfish, one can use the most basic equipment used for fishing. Below are some catfishing tips that will help you to be able to catch larger catfish:

-It is good to do catfishing during early fall and spring because water is high due to the melting of the snow and autumn rains and this makes catfish more active.

-Catfish are known t be more active during the night and less active during the night. Most experts in catfishing recommend that you do your catfishing during dusk to be able to catch more catfish.

-Warm water causes catfish to be slow moving and groggy that is why it is advisable to do catfishing during summer nights.

-Areas where catfish typically lurk include fallen trees, hollowed stumps, side banks and base of dams.

-Be sure that you will make little to no noise especially if you are doing your catfishing at night since there are not daytime noises to cover up the noise you make.

-It is also advisable that you know information about the different types of catfish as well as their habitat, the baits that they tend to get attracted to and other important facts. This way, you will be able to at least estimate where to do and how to do your catfishing depending on the type of catfish that you want to catch.

-When you decide to fish in still waters like lakes or ponds, it is vital that you use a live bait that is able to wiggle around and create vibrations in the water that is essential to catch the attention of the catfish.

-Fresher baits tends to attract the attention of a catfish more compared to baits that are not very fresh.

-When your hook is already in the water, try to make no movements if possible and make sure to keep the hook down on the water. After 12 minutes and nothing happens, try to look for other area which you think is a good place that catfish may lurk or hide.
